Hello, I’m Robert Flack, an experienced science teacher and private tutor based in Exeter. For more than a decade I have been helping young people discover that science isn’t just a subject to memorise—it is a way of understanding the world around us.
My journey into teaching began with a fascination for science. I graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Biomedical Science, gaining practical experience in medical research and analytical chemistry before choosing a career in education. I completed my PGCE and later my Master’s in Researching Practice in Education at the University of Cambridge, where I specialised in the psychological construct of self-efficacy—the belief students have in their own ability to succeed. This area of educational psychology has shaped the way I teach ever since. I firmly believe that confidence is often the missing ingredient in learning. Many students don’t struggle because they lack ability; they struggle because they have begun to believe they “aren’t good at science.” My role is to change that. Through carefully planned lessons, patient explanations and plenty of encouragement, I help students develop both their scientific understanding and the confidence to tackle challenging questions independently.
Throughout my career, I have taught students across the full range of abilities and backgrounds, including those preparing for GCSE examinations and those requiring additional educational support. My current role involves teaching young people who are unable to attend mainstream education due to medical, social, emotional or mental health needs. This has strengthened my ability to adapt lessons to each individual student, build positive relationships and create a calm, supportive learning environment where every learner can thrive.
Science is constantly evolving, and I enjoy bringing that excitement into every lesson. Whether we’re exploring the chemistry behind everyday reactions, understanding how the human body works, or investigating the forces that shape our universe, I encourage students to ask questions, think critically and develop genuine curiosity. Success in GCSE Science comes from understanding concepts rather than memorising facts, and that is the philosophy that underpins my teaching.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time exploring the beautiful countryside around Devon. You’ll often find me cycling the quiet country lanes around Exeter or walking across Dartmoor and along the South West Coast Path. These landscapes provide endless reminders of the science that surrounds us—from geology and ecology to weather systems and conservation. They also reinforce my belief that learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends.
I’m also a keen badminton player and have represented and captained teams over many years. Sport has taught me the importance of perseverance, resilience and continuous improvement—qualities that I encourage in every student I teach. Progress rarely happens overnight, but with consistent effort and the right support, remarkable improvements are possible.
When you choose me as a tutor, you are choosing someone who combines scientific expertise with a genuine passion for helping young people succeed. Every lesson is tailored to the individual, whether your child needs help catching up, building confidence, or striving for the highest grades.
My aim is simple: to help every student leave each lesson understanding a little more than when they arrived, believing in themselves a little more than they did before, and feeling confident that success in science is within their reach.
I look forward to helping your child achieve their full potential.
